Your card is charged for the plan you chose and your site keeps running — $12 on day 46 if you started on Starter, and on day 15 on the other plans. The date is printed on your dashboard from day one; cancel any time before it and nothing is charged. You can move up to Growth, Dropship or Business on any day.
So that a site you spent weeks building does not switch off by accident the day your free period ends. It also keeps out the people who were never going to use it, which keeps the themes and the help for the people who are.

Card through Stripe or PayPal, wherever each of them operates — you connect whichever you already have, or both; bank transfer everywhere; cash on delivery where your market uses it. Money goes to your own account, never through ours.
